SATOU Kensaku

Kensaku Satou is a Japanese taiko drummer acclaimed both in Japan and internationally. He performed a solo on the giant taiko drum Fuji at the Closing Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and has appeared on BBC World Service, earning recognition from audiences around the world.

He has presented ceremonial performances at numerous sacred sites and spiritual landmarks, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Miyajima, Takachiho Shrine, Togakushi Shrine, and Kumano Hongu Taisha.

Sato has collaborated with distinguished artists across diverse disciplines, including Living National Treasure shakuhachi master Keisuke Zenyoji, Noh performer Reijiro Tsumura, and dancers Kaiji Moriyama, Mimoza Koike, and Fukiko Takase.

Through his lifelong exploration of integrated body movement and awareness, he developed his original physical training system, the Fuji Method. His teaching has been highly regarded by martial artists, dancers, musicians, and professional athletes alike.

Using taiko as a gateway to unlock the innate potential of body and mind, Sato pursues a multifaceted career encompassing performance, education, and physical research.

Based in the sacred mountains of Togakushi, where he continues his daily practice and training, he is celebrated for his overwhelming stage presence, explosive performance energy, refined technique, and expressive artistry. He is often described as “the man chosen by the taiko drum.”

2003 – Japan–Portugal 460th Anniversary Commemorative Performances and European Tour (Japan Foundation Project)
2008 – Became the first taiko performer to receive the New Artist Award at the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival
2011–2014 – Directed and performed in the Fuji Project, a series of support concerts for communities affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake
2015 – Speaker at TEDx ShinshuUniversity
2016 – Featured on BBC World Service’s Global Beats; selected as the only artist from Asia among seven musicians introduced worldwide
